What happens in a theta
brain wave state?
Electrical
activity in the brain is displayed in the form of brain
waves. There are four frequencies at which the brain waves
operate, depending on the activity that the brain is
pursuing.
Reading this, you will probably be in ‘beta’, about 14-30
cycles per second. They are the fastest of the brain waves,
and we operate in this frequency when our minds are
strongly engaged with what we are doing.
Next on the list is ‘alpha’, at about 9-13 cycles per
second. When you take ‘time out’ you are in alpha – perhaps
enjoying a walk or relaxing after work.
Then we get to the ‘theta’ brain wave, which has a
frequency between 4 and 8 cycles per second. It is a state
in which tasks become so automatic that you can mentally
disengage from them. It is in this state that we very often
get the answers to the problems that we have been stressing
about! Perhaps you are in the bath and have a ‘Eureka’
moment, or perhaps you just suddenly know how to solve that
problem that has been bugging you whilst driving along a
familiar stretch of road. The answer can come from nowhere,
as if by magic.
Have you ever had the
experience of falling asleep, or indeed waking, and an
unbidden thought drops into your brain? This occurs as we
journey through the brain wave states, and the unbidden
thought is generated in theta. When we go to bed and read
for a few minutes before attempting sleep, we are likely to
be in low beta. When we put the book down, turn off the
lights and close our eyes, our brainwaves will descend from
beta, to alpha, to theta and finally, when we fall asleep,
to delta.
A Theta Practitioner can access this wonderful state of
mind by consciously lowering the frequency of their brain
waves. It connects us to a ‘deeper consciousness’ from
which answers flow and limiting beliefs are eliminated.
The fourth, slowest, brain wave, is ‘delta’, occurring at
about 1 to 3 cycles per second. This equates to sleep.
